May is the month that is set aside to raise awareness about high blood pressure, or hypertension. It is estimated that 16 million people in America have high blood pressure, and some of them do not even know that they have this dangerous condition. High blood pressure increases the risk of stroke and heart attack. That is why the Center for Disease Control is encouraging health care providers and patients to take all of the precautionary measures to reduce the risk of this condition. Stress management, proper communication between patients and health care providers, healthy diet and exercise will help people keep their blood pressure within the recommended range.

The ADA teamed up with the CDC, American Heart Association and many other organizations in Million Hearts. Their goal is help prevent one million strokes and heart attacks within the next five years.
